National Library of China - Library of the Year 2008

Yesterday, I attend a ceremony in Kunlun Hotel to receive the "Library of the Year 2008" award on behalf of Dr. ZHAN Furui, Director of National Library of China.
The Annual Awards of Chinese Book Industry is co-sponsored by China Publishers and Sina Books, and includes awards for publishers, distributors, planners, authors, libraries and books.
Innovation is one of the most important criteria for the section of the candidates. National Library of China opened its new building in September 2008, and provides many new services throught the application of high technologies, such as wireless LAN, RFID, portable electronic reader, mobile phone service, etc.

CBIP demonstrated today

Today, Digital Media Co., Ltd., of China Publishing Group demonstrated its pilot project "Chinese Books in Print", which is based on sample copies from publishers. DMC scans all the pages of covers, TOCs, colophons and last pages of books, and makes OCR to convert the images into characters. Catalogers can use the digital information for cataloging MARC records, which can be used by booksellers for book distribution and by libraries for enriched library cataloging. If the project is successful, the information flow of the whole book industry chain can be more efficient, and the work load of catalogers from publishers (for CIP records), booksellers (for distribution) and libraries (for enriched cataloging) can saved to a great extent.

Metadata Resource Sharing among Publisher, Booksellers and Libraries

Today, Mr. YANG Wensheng, CEO of the Chinese Books in Print, visited National Library of China and discussed the possibility of cooperation between his company and cataloging librarians in NLC. Mr. Yang is responsible for some research projects related to standards in the publishing industry, such as ONIX application in China and a pre-publication bibliographic information standard. He is making efforts to realize metadata resource sharing among publishers, booksellers and library acquisitions and cataloging workflows.
