Foreign Language Speaking Volunteers organized in NLC

Today in the afternoon, the launching ceremony of the Foreign Language Speaking Volunteers of the National Library of China was held. About 40 young volunteers attended the ceremony.

As one of the advisers, I attended the ceremony and talked about my experiences in English language translation for NLC.

Foreign languages are very important for NLC to become internationalized. More and more young staff members can speak foreign languages very well. NLC will become IFLA Chinese language center, and more volunteers are needed for IFLA activities and other international cooperation activities.

OLCC Annual Meeting Held in Hefei

OLCC (Online Library Cataloging Center) Annual Meeting was held in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province, July 24-25, 2008. The center is run by the Chinese Acquisitions & Cataloging Department of National Library of China. As the director of OLCC, I gave the annual report in the morning of July 24, and presented "Latestest Developments of International Library Cataloging Community" in the afternoon of the same day.

OLCC was founded in 1997 as a cooperative cataloging consortium. It has 12 subcenters, about 500 members and about 1000 users in China. Before the meeting, the inauguration ceremony of the Anhui Provincial Subcenter was held, and some local cultural administrative officers attended the ceremony.

There are 80 delegates for this meeting. After this meeting, a training session will be held in Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), and there will be about 100 attendees.

OLCC Annual Meeting to Be Held in Hefei

The Annual meeting of the Online Library Cataloging Center (OLCC) is to be held in Anhui Provincial Library tomorrow (July 24-25, 2008). As the director of OLCC, I will chair the meeting and speak about the latest developments of library cataloging in the world.

Today in the evening, I chaired the meeting of OLCC Subcenter Directors. Dr. CHEN Li, Deputy Director of the National Library of China, and delegates from 13 subcenters attended the meeting. We discussed the future policies and mechanisms of OLCC.

Opening of NLC new building postponed

Due to various reasons, the opening (originally planned in July) of the new building (Phase II) of the National Library of China has been postponed to September 2008.

Chinese translations of IFLA papers posted

After the work of a month, all the eight Chinese translations of cataloging-related papers for the IFLA Conference (WLIC) have been posted to the IFLANET at:

OCLC's CEO visited National Library of China

Mr. Jay Jordan, OCLC's CEO, visited National Library of China today in the morning. Dr. ZHAN Furui, Director of National Library of China, and some of his colleagues met with OCLC guests. Among the OCLC guests, Mr. Andrew Wang, vice-president of OCLC, Ms. Shu-En Tsai, Director of Asia-Pacific Services, and some of their colleagues from the OCLC China Office also attended the meeting.

We talked about the CNMARC-MARC21 conversion test files for the uploading of NLC Chinese records in the near future, and our mutual interest in the OCLC membership development.

National Library of China to provide translation records to UNESCO

National Library of China has begun to submit bibliographic records to UNESCO for Index Translationum. Founded in 1932, Index Translationum contains about 1.7 million bibliographic records of translations from about 100 UNESCO member countries. Before 2008, Index Translationum contacted related organizations many times for Chinese records, but failed. In January 2008, I received a letter from Peter Lor, Secretary General of IFLA, concerning Index Translationum. I contacted the editor immediately and submitted 1,000 test records. By now, we have gone through all the procedures and begun to submit records on a regular basis. I hope users can search Chinese records in the database in the near future.
